FRESNO, Calif. — After holding a 6-2 lead through eight innings, the CSUB baseball team suffered a late rally by the University of Buffalo, resulting in a 7-6, 11-inning loss in the opening game of the 31st Annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic, hosted by Fresno State.

Buffalo (5-5 overall) began the bottom of the ninth down four runs, but an error by CSUB shortstop Kyle Richardson allowed Brad Cochrane to reach first. A Bobby Pizzuto double and three RBI home run by Kevin McCall cut the Roadrunner lead to 6-4. The Bills pushed one more run across the plate with an RBI double to force extra innings.

In the bottom of the 11th, with one out, Chris Ciesla plated the game-winning run with an RBI single to right. Adam Skonieczki, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, scored to end the game, 7-6.

Bakersfield (3-6 overall) took an early lead with a second inning rally. With a one-out single up the middle by designated hitter Brandon Van Dam. Martin Medina drew a walk, moving Van Dam to second. Joey Mills then laid down a bunt, but the Bills’ pitcher’s attempt to throw out Van Dam at third flew high into left field, sending all the runners ahead an extra base.

With runners on second and third, Brandon Boren’s ground out to short scored Medina, giving the ‘Runners a 2-0 lead, before Richardson flied out to end the inning.

Bakersfield strung together three singles to add one run in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Medina singled to left and Miller followed with a single to right, moving Medina to third. Boren then singled through the left side, earning his second RBI of the game and giving CSUB a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth, Medina led off with a single to short, advanced to second on a single to center by Boren, advanced to third on a balk, and scored on sacrifice fly to left by Richardson.

Buffalo got one run back in the bottom of the inning when Charlie Karstedt plated Adam Skonieczki, who had reached on a walk, with a double to right center. Chris Ciesla reached on a fielders choice, while Karstedt was thrown out on the play. A single to left center by Brad Agustin put runners on first and third, but Bakersfield starting pitcher Mickey Jannis worked his way out of the inning by drawing a ground out to third to end the inning.

A two-run homer by Derek Geisinger in the top of the seventh stretched Bakersfield’s lead to 6-1, and reliever Sam Jones kept the Bulls to just one run in the eighth, before giving up the four runs on four hits and one error in the ninth.

Spenser Messmore, who entered the game in the 11th for Jones, took the loss for the Roadrunners, his first of the season.

Zach Anderson was credited with the win for Buffalo, striking out seven and allowing just one hit in the final four innings of play.

Tournament action continues Tuesday when Bakersfield takes on 2008 National Champion Fresno State at 6:05 p.m.
