PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Roadrunner baseball team continued its first Western Athletic Conference series of the season and fell on the road at Grand Canyon on Saturday night. CSU Bakersfield dropped its second-straight game to the Lopes, this time, by a score of 7-4, despite outhitting GCU 11-8 in Phoenix.

GCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead on CSUB and starter Isaiah Moten in the bottom of the second inning. A Josh Meyer double plated a pair of runs before Marc Mumper’s grounder drove in the third run of the frame. The Lopes scored a run in the fourth inning before adding another pair of runs in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead on CSUB.

The ‘Runners got on the board with two runs in the top of the sixth. With two outs, senior Junior Felix singled to right field, bringing Tyler Kaim and Brandon Heinrich home to make the score 6-2. The Lopes added another run in the bottom half of the sixth, extending their lead to 7-2.

Both teams were held scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings as the ‘Runners went to their final three outs. CSUB went down swinging in the top of the ninth, posting two runs to get to the final score of 7-4. Senior Max Carter plated the first run of the inning with his sacrifice fly to score Mark Pena. Mahlik Jones singled through the left side to plate Andrew Penner, but the ‘Runners were unable to complete the comeback.

CSUB’s first three men in the order all tallied two hits in the game: Pena, Penner, and David Metzgar. Five other ‘Runners had a hit in the game, but CSUB left 11 men on base. Felix led the ‘Runners with two RBI on Saturday.

Moten (2-2) took the loss after throwing 3.2 innings against GCU. Kenny Johnson came in to relieve for the next two innings while Andrew Hansen closed the final two and a third, giving up no runs and only one hit. GCU’s Jake Repavich earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings with only two runs allowed.

The Roadrunners (11-7, 2-0 WAC) will wrap up their series against the Lopes (8-13, 2-0 WAC) with a final game on Sunday afternoon. First pitch in Phoenix is scheduled for 12 p.m.
