BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The CSU Bakersfield baseball team opens the 2017 season this weekend when the Roadrunners host defending Pac-12 champion Utah. CSUB will be giving away schedule magnets for the fans attending.

Weather permitting Friday and Saturday’s games will begin at 6 p.m. with the series finale starting at 12 p.m. on Sunday. If weather becomes an issue as there is rain in the forecast, head to for the most up-to-date information.

Utah (26-29, 19-11 Pac-12) is led by Jayson Rose who was selected as a second team preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Rose, the probable Friday night starter for the Utes, Rose set the school record for most strikeouts in a season (106) in 2016. He went 8-5 as he was named All-Conference.

The baseball coaches of the Western Athletic Conference have selected CSU Bakersfield's David Metzgar and Max Carter preseason All-Conference. As a team, CSUB (19-37, 12-14 WAC) was chosen sixth. The league’s nine head coaches could not vote for their own team or players.

Seattle U is the preseason favorite to win the 2017 Western Athletic Conference baseball title and Redhawks’ pitcher Nick Meservey and Grand Canyon outfielder Garrison Schwartz were selected WAC Preseason Pitcher and Player of the Year respectively in a vote of the league’s nine head coaches, who could not vote for their own team or players.

Utah has played in Bakersfield on six previous occasions. The Utes won 3-of-4 against CSUB during the Roadrunners’ inaugural season in 2009. CSUB took a pair of games from Utah to close the 2012 campaign.
