BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Ross Hough's (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Central Arizona College) single with one out in the bottom of the 11th gave Bakersfield a 2-1 victory over Sacramento State Saturday night.
Soloman Williams' (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) RBI ground out to first in the bottom of the first gave the 'Runners the lead for the first time in the series. Roadrunner starting pitcher James Barragan (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) retired 16 of the previous 18 Hornets he faced heading into the ninth. With one out, leadoff hitter Nathan Lukes singled to center. With the count 1-2 on Kyle Moses, Lukes stole second to keep the Hornets out of the double play. Moses was hit by the next pitch. Rhys Hoskins singled to left to plate Lukes and tie the game. David Del Grande popped out to second for out No. 2. Will Soto fouled out to third to end the ninth.
Williams opened the bottom of the ninth with a single up the middle off of Sac State closer Sutter McLoughlin, the WAC leader in saves. Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) struck out looking on three pitches. Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) singled to right to bring up Hough who struck out swinging for the second out. Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) grounded out to third to end the inning.
Scotty Burcham led off the top of the 10th with an infield single. Burcham was called out when Ryan Locke interferred with Hough, the Bakersfield catcher, who was trying throw Burcham out attempting to steal. Barragan struck out Locke and got the next Hornet to foul out to end the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) walked. On a 1-1 count to Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS), Hein stole second. Carter flew out to right. Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) would then strike out on four pitches from McCloughlin to end the 'Runner threat.
After pitching the first 10, Barragan was relieved by Steven Gee (Fr., Taft, Calif., Taft Union HS) to start the 11th. Brandon Hunley doubled down the leftfield line to begin the frame. Lukes' sacrifice bunt moved Hunley to third. Bakersfield brought the infield in as Moses stepped to the plate. Moses flew out to center, but it wasn't deep enough for Hunley to attempt to score. Hoskins was intentionally walked to bring up Del Grande, who was 0-4 coming into the 11th. The moved paid off as Del Grande flied out to left for the final out.
Williams led off the bottom of the 11th singling to right off of the third Sac State pitcher, Alex Palsha. Palsh bobbled Jones' sacrifice attempt, allowing both runners to reach safely. Pierce's sac bunt moved both runners up a base. With the count 1-1, Hough singled up the middle for the gamewinning run.
Barragan and Gee combined on a six-hitter. Barragan struck out seven in the longest outing of his career. Williams, Hein, and Hough each posted two hits.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
