MANHATTAN, Kan.—Bakersfield (16-22) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Kansas State (22-19) 5-2 Monday night.

The Wildcats opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first, but CSUB right fielder Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) picked up his ninth assist of the year to throw out a K-State runner at third to end the inning. Kansas State loaded the bases with two outs in the second, but ‘Runner starter Nick Rogowski (Jr., Woodbridge, Va., Cypress College) got RJ Santigate to pop out to short for the final out of the frame.

K-State struck for their second run of the night on Austin Fisher’s sacrifice fly which drove in Max Brown. The Roadrunners responded right away when Soloman Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) broke an 0-for-25 slump with a pinch-hit home run to lead off the sixth inning. Williams’ last hit was in his final at-bat against North Dakota Mar. 21. Bakersfield tied the score at two later in the inning on a Wildcats’ error.

Back-to-back singles from Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) and Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) opened the top of the seventh. Both moved up a base on a Cody White (Fr., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) sacrifice bunt. Williams was intentionally walked to load the bases for Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS). Ethan Landon, the third K-State pitcher of the night for the Wildcats, was brought in to face Jones.

The ‘Runner shortstop hit a grounder to shortstop Austin Fisher who threw to second baseman Ross Kivett for the second out. Kivett’s throw went wide of first allowing two runs to score. Jones advanced to second on the play. He tried to score on Andrew Lojewski’s (Jr., Woodland, Calif., American River College) infield single, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Hayden Carter (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Vista HS) relieved Rogowski to start the seventh. With one out, Carter walked Ross Kivet to bring up Santigate who on a 1-2 count, doubled down the left field line. Fisher appeared to have posted the tying hit, but Mahlik Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS), the CSUB third baseman made a spectacular backhand diving catch on Fisher’s liner and tagged the third base bag for the inning-ending double play.

CSUB added a run in the top of the eighth. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, back-to-back K-State walks from Hayden Carter, brought the tying run up in Blair DeBord. Max Carter, the ‘Runners closer, entered the game and with the count 0-1, DeBord hit a liner to left. Lojewski made a diving catch to his glove-side for the third out.

Brown opened the ninth with an infield single. Kivett, the K-State leadoff hitter, lined out to right for out No. 1. Santigate walked to again bring up the tying run in Fisher. Fisher hit a screamer up the middle to Mylz Jones who caught the ball and stepped on the second base bag for a double play to conclude the game.

David Metzgar (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) and Logan Trowbridge (Jr., Santa Cruz, Calif., College of San Mateo) each had two hits to lead Bakersfield. Rogowski, Hayden Carter, and Max Carter combined on a seven-hitter. The Wildcats couldn’t take advantage of the nine walks that the trio of Roadrunner pitchers issued. The teams combined to leave 20 runners on base (10 each).

The series continues Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. (CDT). The game will be once again televised on Fox College Sports, check your local listings for the channel on your cable/satellite system.
