EDINBURG, Texas--For the second consecutive night, Bakersfield (15-21, 8-6 WAC) and Texas-Pan American (16-24, 6-8 WAC) played a one-run ball game, but Friday night saw the Roadrunners take the victory, 3-2 against the Broncs.
UTPA took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Bryan Ramirez RBI double. The Roadrunners tied the score in the top of the third when Max Carter's (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) sacrifice fly plated Nick Vehlewald (Jr., So., Bakersfield, Calif., Garces HS).
The Broncs went ahead in the bottom of the third when Alberto Morales singled in Alex Howe. With two outs in the fifth, Jordie Hein's (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) single drove in Ross Hough (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Central Arizona College. The 'Runners went ahead for the first time in the top of the seventh. Again with two outs, a Hein single moved Hough to third. Hough scored on a UTPA error for the go ahead run.
Evan Mason opened the bottom of the ninth by working out a walk against 'Runner reliever James Barragan (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS). Barragan responded by getting Howe, UTPA's leading hitter to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. Victor Carter, Jr. walked to keep the Broncs' inning alive. Alex Fortuna entered the game as a pinch runner for Carter, Jr. as Ramirez came to bat. On a 3-2 count, Barragan struck out Ramirez to get the 'Runners the victory.
Barragan went 5.2 innings, striking out six, walking four, while only giving up one hit. Barragan, Hayden Carter (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Vista HS) and starter Steven Gee (Fr., Taft, Calif., Taft Union HS) combined on a five-hitter. Hein, Hough, and Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) combined for all six of the 'Runner hits (two each).
The series concludes Saturday with a 1 p.m. (CDT) first pitch.
