BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) was a home run away from the cycle as Bakersfield defeated Chicago State 6-4 Friday night.
Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) singled in Gusbeth in the bottom of the second to give the ‘Runners an early advantage. RBI’s from Ross Hough (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Central Arizona College) and Oscar Sanay (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) pushed the CSUB lead to three.
Chicago State loaded the bases with one out in the fourth for Nathan Poff. The Cougars’ designated hitter, Poff singled up the middle for two RBI’s. Bakersfield starter Taylor Aikenhead (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Bakersfield College) got Joelh Calixto to ground into an inning ending double play to end the CSU threat.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Hein tripled in Hough. Hein came home later in the frame on a Mylz Jones (So., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) sacrifice fly. Max Carter (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) walked with two outs and scored on a Gusbeth double for the third CSUB tally of the inning.
Chase Matheson’s RBI single in the top of the fifth cut the ‘Runners lead to 6-3. Chicago State put Cougars on second and third with one out. Sanford Hunt came up as the tying run but Aikenhead struck him out. Mattingly Romanin walked to load the bases and brought up Robert Swenson who struck out to conclude the fifth.
The Roadrunners loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with one out, but Pierce grounded into a double play to conclude the frame. Nick Rogowski (Jr., Woodbridge, Va., Cypress College) relieved Aikenhead to start the sixth and walked Matheson. Rogowski hit Jordan Stroschein which brought up Hunt again as the tying run. Once again Hunt struck out. Romanin walked to load the bases. Swenson came up next and plated Matheson with a sacrifice fly. Poff flew out to second for the final out.
Sergio Luna (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif., East Los Angeles College) took over on the hill for the Roadrunners in the eighth and struck out pinch-hitter Evan Davis. Luna walked ChicagoState leadoff hitter Jared Patterson which brought up Julian Russell who grouned into a 3-6 double play for the final outs of the inning.
Carter, the Roadrunner closer, entered to pitch the ninth. He began his stint by getting Matheson to hit a grounder back to the mound. Stroschein struck out for the second out. Hunt struck out for Carter’s team leading third save of the game.
Gusbeth went 3-for-3 with a walk and a RBI to pace the ‘Runners. Hough posted two hits.
