BAKERSFIELD, Calif.— Three freshmen pitchers combined on a six-hitter as Bakersfield (5-2) defeated Towson (3-2) 8-1 Saturday night at Hardt Field.

The starter, Steven Gee (Taft, Calif., Taft Union HS) scattered two hits and did not allow a run over the first seven innings  before giving way to fellow Alec Daily (Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) to start the eighth with a 5-0 lead. The first three Towson batters reached with Peter Bowles driving in Dominic Fratantuono. Bowles’ hit chased Daily in favor of a third freshman, Garrett Nimmo (Temecula, Calif., Temecula Valley HS).

With tying run on deck, Nimmo’s third pitch nearly resulted in a triple play, but CSUB retired the first two runners. The Tigers would then advance runners to the corners for leadoff hitter Zach Fisher, but Nimmo got Fisher to ground to first to conclude the inning. Nimmo allowed two batters to reach in the ninth. However, Fratantuono grounded into the fourth Roadrunner double play of the night to end the game.

Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) paced the ‘Runners offense as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Garrett Pierce (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
