BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Bakersfield defeated Milwaukee 8-3 in game two of the opening series of 2014 between the two clubs.
The Panthers (0-2) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a pair of RBI singles from Mitch Ghelfi and Tyler Hermann. The Roadrunners responded by tying the score with a pair of runs that came in on a hit by pitch and a balk.
Chance Gusbeth (So., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) hit his first career home run to lead off the bottom of the third to give the ‘Runners (2-0) the lead for the first time. Luke Meeteer tied the game in the top of the fourth when his grounder to third plated Ryan Solberg.
Soloman Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Golden West College) returned the lead to the ‘Runners in the bottom of the fourth with a double that scored David Metzgar (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Paraclete HS) and Logan Trowbridge (Jr., Santa Cruz, Calif., College of San Mateo. Williams’ hit chased Panthers’ starter Jake Tuttle in favor of Cody Peterson. Mahlik Jones’ (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) safety squeeze later in the inning scored Williams for a 6-3 CSUB lead.
Bakersfield added a run in the sixth and one more in the seventh .
Gusbeth went 3-for-4 with two RBI’s while Williams was 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and two runs scored. Metzgar also went 2-for-4 and he scored two runs. Jordie Hein (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) also had two hits (2-for-5). The teams combined for 13 walks and left 26 on base.
The series concludes Sunday at 12 p.m.
