FRESNO, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield (25-13) scored four runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for a 8-5 victory over FresnoState (8-24) Wednesday night.
Bakersfield loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, when Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) singled to right to plate a pair of runs. Frank Martinez (Sr., Riverside, Calif., East LA College) added to the lead with a single that drove in two runs later in the inning.
Fresno State broke the seal in the fourth when the Bulldogs took advantage of two Roadrunner errors to score three runs. The Roadrunners loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth when Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., SaddlebackCollege) just missed hitting a grand slam home run as what turned out to be a double was a foot short of clearing the leftfield fence. Cael Brockmeyer (Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) tied the score with an RBI groundout to first.
Jordan Luplow hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to make it 8-5. Bakersfield added one run in the eight. CSUB has scored 24 of its last 30 runs with two outs dating back to the start of the UTSA series Apr. 12.
Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) went 4-for-4 to lead CSUB. Sanay reached base in all five of his plate appearances as he was hit for the 13th time this season during the game. He also scored three runs. Martinez was 2-for-2 with two walks. Jones added two hits.
Roadrunner pitchers Chuck Buchanan (R-Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., AllanHancockCollege) and James Barragan (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) combined on a seven-hitter. Buchanan allowed four hits and struck out eight over the first six before giving way to Barragan who was credited with the three-inning save.
The Roadrunners return to WAC play Friday when the Roadrunners host Dallas Baptist at 6 p.m.
