BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- Frank Martinez (Sr., Riverside, Calif., East LA College) smacked a two-out, two-RBI single with the bases loaded to give CSU Bakersfield (24-13, 9-3 WAC) a 6-5 series sweep over UTSA (19-16, 4-7 WAC) Sunday afternoon.

For the third consecutive day UTSA took the lead first when Jesse Baker’s sac fly plated Tony Ramirez. In the top of the second. Kevin Younger (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) tied the score when he doubled in Cael Brockmeyer (Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) in the bottom of the third.

Tony Ramirez put UTSA up 2-1 with an RBI single in the top of the sixth. With a runner at second and one out in the seventh UTSA brought on closer Matt Sims in relief of Nolan Trabanino. Sims got Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) to ground out to second to bring up Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., SaddlebackCollege) who tripled down the right field line to score Jorie Hein (So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) to tie the game at two.

Brockmeyer drove in Christensen with a single to left to give CSUB the lead, 3-2. UTSA put runners on first and second with one out in the eighth to bring up Ramirez who faced Christensen who came on in relief. Ramirez struck out which brought John Bormann to the plate. Christensen struck out Bormann to end the inning.

Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) provided a run for Bakersfield in the bottom of the eighth when he doubled in Kris Cayton (Jr., Manhattan Beach, Calif., LA Harbor College).

Christensen walked AJ Good to open the top of the ninth to bring up Baker who singled to right. With runners on the corners, John Welborn bunted, Christensen threw home, but Martinez, the CSUB catcher dropped the ball. Both runners advanced a base. Christensen then hit Daniel Rockett to load the bases.

Taylor Aikenhead (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) relieved Christensen and walked  Horacio Correa III to tie the game. RJ Perucki’s sacrifice fly scored Good for the go-ahead run.

Brockmeyer walked with one out in the bottom of the night and moved to second on a Matt Sims wild pitch. Younger walked as well. Sims, who came on in the eighth, was removed in favor of Logan Onda. Onda gave up a single to right Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS). With the bases loaded, Cayton struck out looking, setting it up for Martinez’s gamewinning hit.  

Christensen was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Brockmeyer, Martinez, Hein, and Sanay all had two hits. All six CSUB runs were scored with two outs.

Bakersfield travels to FresnoState for the first of three weekday games against the Bulldogs in the month of April Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
