Brockmeyer Hits Gamewinning HR In Extra Innings
SACRAMENTO, Calif—Cael Brockmeyer’s (Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms) three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning gave CSU Bakersfield (17-7, 2-1 WAC) a 6-3 victory over Sacramento State (13-10, 1-2 WAC) to take the opening league baseball series for both schools Sunday.
For the first time in the series, the Roadrunners scored first when Frank Martinez’s (Sr., Riverside, Calif., East LA College) sacrifice fly in the top of the second plated. The Hornets tied the game in the fourth on a Justin Higley RBI single.
Rhys Hoskins doubled in Higley in the bottom of the seventh for the go-ahead run. A seeing-eye single from Dane Fujinaka with two outs in the frame gave SacState a two-run advantage. Bakersfield put runners on the corners with two outs in the eighth. Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) singled in Jordie Hein (So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) to make it 3-2. The Hornets brought in Brandon Creel to relieve Tanner Mendonca to face Brockmeyer. Creel hit the 6-5 first baseman to load the bases.
Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., SaddlebackCollege) tied the game when he scored on a Creel wild pitch. Higley singled to center to open the bottom of the ninth off of CSUB reliever Hayden Carter (So., San Diego, Calif., Vista HS). Hoskins walked on four straight pitches to move Higley up 90 feet. This brought in Christensen, the Roadrunner closer, to face Nathan Lukes who lined into a Sanay unassisted double play at second. Scotty Burcham singled to right to push Hoskins to third to bring up pinch hitter Kyle Moses who popped up to Sanay at second to send the game into extra innings.
Christensen led off the 10th with an infield single. Kevin Younger (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) attempted to sacrifice Christensen up a base with a bunt, but Younger (who was credited with the sacrifice) reached on an error by Sac State’s backup catcher, Shawn Wheeler. With one out, Brockmeyer hit the home run, his third of the year to put CSUB ahead.
Will Soto walked on four straight Christensen pitches to begin the bottom of the 10th. Christensen retired the next two Hornets to bring up Chris Lewis who struck out swinging to end the inning.
Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) extended his hitting streak to 15 with a single in the top of the second. Jeremy Rodriguez holds the school record as he posted a 19-game hitting streak in 2010. Brockmeyer and Christensen both tallied two hits. Christensen evened his record to 1-1 on the year as he earned the victory with a two-inning stint.
