BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- The CSU Bakersfield baseball team defeated Hofstra 7-3 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Hardt Field, but fell to the Pride 6-4 in the second game to finish the day with a split.

CSUB senior catcher/first baseman Cael Brockmeyer (Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) paced the 'Runners (3-3) on the day by collecting five hits over the course of the two games to go along with three RBIs and one run scored.

In the opening game, the Pride (3-5) scored in the top of the first, when Austin Nyman came home on a Scott Brattvet (Sr., Trabuco Canyon, Calif., Santa Ana College) wild pitch. Brockmeyer tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.

With the bases loaded and one out, Frank Martinez (Sr., Riverside, Calif., East L.A. College) walked for the second CSUB run. Hofstra starter John Tiedemann struck out Chance Gusbeth (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) four out No. 2. Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) grounded out to second to end the inning.

A Gusbeth double plated Garrett Pierce (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) before Jones' ground out to short scored Martinez to make it 4-1. Brockmeyer posted his second RBI with a single in the fourth.

Taylor Stuart's RBI single in the top of the seventh made it 5-2. Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) responded with a two-RBI single in the bottom of seventh. The Pride put runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth but Roadrunner reliever Taylor Aikenhead (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Bakersfield College) struck out Kenny Jackson for the final out.

Brockmeyer's three hits paced the Roadrunners Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS), Christensen, and Pierce all had two hits. Brattvet went the first eight innings to pick up his second victory of the season. Kevin Brantley led the Pride with three hits.

In game two, CSUB took a 3-1 lead after three innings, but the Pride rallied back with a four-run fourth inning to take a lead it never lost.

Hofstra struck first in game two, scoring one run on three hits in the top of the first off of CSUB starter Chuck Buchanan (R-Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Allan Hancock College). The 'Runners quickly evened the score in the bottom of the frame after the first three 'Runners walked and Brockmeyer hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Christensen and tie the game.

The 'Runners jumped out to a 3-1 lead with a two-run third inning where they took advantage of a bases-loaded walk to senior left fielder Kevin Younger (Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS), which was then followed by Jones getting hit by a pitch to drive in another run.

The Pride answered with a four-run rally of their own in the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead. The 'Runners added one run in the fourth when Sanay drove scored Christensen, but the Hofstra bullpen was able to close down the CSUB lineup in a quiet final five innings. CSUB relief pitcher Hayden Carter (So., San Diego, Calif., Vista, Calif.) shut down the Pride offense with three scoreless innings before giving up one run in the top of the ninth. He finished by giving up two earned runs over 5.2 innings on three hits and one walk while striking out three.
