IRVINE, Calif.--Andrew Letourneau (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) went 2-for-3 with three RBI's to lead CSU Bakersfield (21-28) past UC Irvine (29-22) 5-4 Saturday afternoon.
Cael Brockmeyer's (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) RBI single in the top of the first opened the scoring. Tommy Reyes' double drove in D.J. Crumlich in the bottom of the third tied the score.
Letourneau kept the game tied with a diving catch in the bottom of the fourth and followed up with an sac fly that scored Jordie Hein (So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) to return the lead to the Roadrunners. A CSUB error led to an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth which tied the score for the second time.
CSUB scored three runs with two outs in the seventh to get back on top. Letourneau broke the tie with a two-RBI double followed by a Kevin Younger (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) double which scored Letourneau.
UC Irvine scored one run in the eighth on a Chris Rabago single. The Anteaters put the go-ahead run on with two outs but Brockmeyer, the CSUB catcher, threw out Jeff Stevens who attempting to advance on a Scott Brattvet (Jr., Trabuco Canyon, Calif., Santa Ana College) pitch in the dirt.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Brattvet walked Jeff Stephens. Pinch hitter Taylor Sparks doubled to left center to put two runners in scoring position. D.J. Crumlich plated Stephens with a sac fly which brought up Tommy Reyes. Brattvet hit a ball to shallow left which saw Younger slide on the left field foul line and make the catch to end the game.
Brattvet tossed his second complete game of the year, scattering nine hits. He struck out four. The Anteaters outhit the Roadrunners 9-6 with Connor Spencer going 3-for-4.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon, first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
