BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Matched up against the first program that they successfully moved through the transition process from a Division II to Division I, CSUB baseball Head Coach Bill Kernen and Assistant Coach Jody Robinson guided their current upstart program to tie the school record of 13 wins with a 6-3 decision over the Cal State Northridge Matadors Friday at Hardt Field.
The Roadrunners’ 13th win of the 2010 season comes exactly at the midway point of the schedule, and breaks a four-game losing streak. Cal State Northridge falls to 16-13 overall.
In 1989 Kernen took over the helm at Cal State Northridge and, in 1990, led the Matadors to the NCAA Division II national title game. The following season, the Matadors competed at the NCAA Division I level, finishing with a 44-18-1 record and a regional runner-up finish.
Now, in the second-ever season of intercollegiate baseball at CSUB, the Roadrunners marked the halfway point of their schedule by tying last year’s record for single-season wins. And they did so by putting all three pieces of the puzzle together in one outing.
Starting pitcher Mickey Jannis (4-1) tossed his second complete game of the season, and the second no-walk game in CSUB history. Jannis struck out three and scattered a dozen hits, never allowing the Matadors to score more than a single run in an inning. The Roadrunners also played errorless defense and collected 10 hits for six runs.
The Matadors struck first with a pair of hits and an RBI-fielder’s choice in the top of the second. But Bakersfield battled right back in the home half of the inning. Jason Kudlock led off with a triple to the center field wall and Kevin Younger followed with an RBI-single up the middle. JJ Henry laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Younger to second and two batters later, Brandon Boren extended his hit streak to 16 games with an RBI-single up the middle.
The Roadrunners added a solo run in the third on a Kudlock RBI-double. Jeremy Rodriguez scored on the play after reaching on a single up the middle.
Cal State Northridge cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the sixth, but Bakersfield responded again with one run in the seventh and two in the eighth, giving Jannis a 6-2 cushion headed into the ninth.
Looking to rally, Dominic D’Anna led of the top of the ninth with a single up the middle, Justin DeMarco singled through the right side and Ridge Carpenter singled to center to load the bases. A wild pitch by Jannis sent D’Anna across home plate, but the Bakersfield senior finished strong with a strikeout and two ground outs.
Boren, Kudlock and Younger had two hits each, while Boren added a pair of RBIs.
DeMarco went 3-for-4 to lead the Matadors at the plate. Ryan Juarez (1-3) took the loss, recording six strikeouts, but allowing nine hits for six runs, including five earned.
The teams continue their three-game series in Northridge Saturday and Sunday. First pitch both days is scheduled for 1 p.m.
