PULLMAN, Wash. — Mike McCarthy pitched CSUB’s second complete game of the weekend and the Roadrunners picked up the program’s first ever shutout, a 3-0 win over Washington State in the final game of a four-game series at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday.
The win gave Bakersfield a 2-2 series tie against the Pac-10 Cougars (14-7), who are currently ranked No. 26 in RPI by boydsworld.com. The Roadrunners move back to an even 11-11, earning that 11th win more than 20 games faster than one season ago.
After a lopsided 14-3 victory for Washington State on Friday and a pair of offensive battles on Saturday, Sunday’s game was in stark contrast as the teams went four complete innings without a run scored.
With two outs in the home half of the second, the Cougars loaded the bases, but Joey Ponciano grounded out to short to leave the runners stranded.
Washington State threatened again in the third, using a pair of hits to put runners on the corners with one out. But McCarthy got out of a jam again getting Matt Argyropoulos to hit into a 5-4-3 double play.
The Roadrunners broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. Garrett Branske led off with a single to center and Jason Kudlock collected his second double of the game, a liner off the left-center wall that scored Branske from first. Cougar starter Travis Cook recorded back-to-back strikeouts of Derek Geisinger and Joey Mills, but Brandon Boren slotted the 2-1 offering through the left side to plate Kudlock and give CSUB a 2-0 lead.
Looking to add some insurance runs in the eighth, Martin Medina reached on an error by third baseman Argryopoulos and advanced to third on the throw. But WSU reliever Paris Shewey got a pair of ground outs to keep Medina stranded at third.
Washington State threatened again in the bottom of the eight as Brett Jacobs drew a leadoff single to right. Michael Weber lined a ball to first baseman Derek Geisinger, who turned a solo double play by tagging his bag to get Jacobs out on the play.
Bakersfield finally added some insurance in the top of the ninth on a one-out solo home run by Kudlock, his third hit of the day, which gave the Roadrunners a 3-0 advantage.
McCarthy then retired three consecutive batters in the final half inning, drawing a ground out to second by Ryan Peterson, a fly out to right by Matt Fanelli and a ground out to first by Garry Kuykendall.
McCarthy (2-2) tallied four strikeouts in his first complete game of the season. The junior right-hander also walked three and scattered eight hits, but got solid play from his errorless defense as the Cougars stranded 10 runners on base.
Kudlock finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Boren, McIntyre and Branske also each added a hit, while Boren tallied CSUB’s third RBI.
Cook (0-1) took the loss for Washington State, giving up a pair of walks and four hits for two runs in 4.2 innings. Shewey struck out five while allowing just one hit and one walk in 3.1 innings. Cougar closer Adam Conley walked one and gave up one hit, Kudlock’s home run, in one inning of work.
The Roadrunners return to Bakersfield for a Wednesday match-up against Stony Brook University at 2:30 p.m. They travel to Valley rival Fresno State on Thursday for a rescheduled game against the Bulldogs. The teams then come back down the 99 for a two-game set at Hardt Field on Friday and Saturday.
