BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield head baseball coach Bill Kernen has announced the signing of two players to National Letters of Intent to begin play for the Roadrunners in 2013, the first season for CSUB in the Western Athletic Conference.

Mylz Jones will join CSUB from Paraclete High School in Lancaster, Calif. Jones was selected All-Alpha League as a sophomore and again as a junior.

“Mylz has all the tools necessary to be a big time shortstop both in college and professionally one day,” said Kernen. “He is also a fine young man from a great family and fulfills our character requirement completely.”

Patrick Higashi has signed with CSU Bakersfield from Piedmont Hills High School in San Jose, Calif. Higashi, who throws and bats lefthanded, hit .448 with two home runs and 15 RBI’s as a junior. Higashi went 4-3 with a 0.80 ERA and 76 strikeouts during the 2011 campaign.

“Patrick Higashi is a multi-faceted athlete who will both pitch and play a position,” Kernen said. “We have a track record of success with two-way players and Patrick will be the latest in a long line of those I’ve had in my coaching career.”

Jones and Highashi join Bakersfield Frontier outfielder Kyle Nixon as part of the 2013 recruiting class.

CSUB will open the 2012 season with a three-game series against Kansas State Feb. 18-20 at Hardt Field.
