DAVIS, Calif.--Martin Medina (Jr., Ventura, Calif., St. Bonaventure HS) hit a home run, scored two runs, and recorded his sixth save of the season as CSUB (23-8) defeated UC Davis (8-20) 6-3 at Dobbins Stadium Apr. 15.
Medina hit his home run to lead off the second inning, only to have Eric Johnson to return the favor in the bottom of the inning. The Aggies scored two in the bottom of the fourth to toake a 3-1 lead.
CSUB scored four runs in the top of the sixth to move back in front. Jeremy Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif., Crespi HS) hit a two-run home run to tie the score 3-3. Kevin Younger (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) drove what proved to be the gamewinner when his single to center plated Oscar Sanay (Fr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS). DC Legg's (Jr., Murrietta, Calif., Cypress College) single later in the inning scored Younger.
CSUB put a insurance run on the board in the eighth, when Mick Gaston (Jr., Quartz Hill, Calif., Quartz Hill HS) singled in Medina In the bottom of the ninth inning, UC Davis' Paul Polit doubled off CSUB starter Mike McCarthy (Sr., Brentwood, Calif., Univ. of Redlands) to open the bottom of the ninth. Medina came on in relief retired the next three Aggies for his sixth save of the season.
Rodriguez, Gaston, and Sanay all posted two hits. McCarthy went eight innings for the victory. McCarthy struck out five and did not walk a batter he earned his fourth victory of the year.
The series continues Saturday in Davis at 1 p.m.
