SAN MARCOS, Texas—Bakersfield (29-14, 12-4 WAC) rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth to defeat Texas State (18-23, 9-7 WAC) 7-5 to open this weekend’s Western Athletic Conference series Friday night.
The Roadrunners took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI’s from Cael Brockmeyer (Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) and Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS). The Bobcats got on the board in the bottom of the first when Austin O’Neal singled in Cody Lovejoy.
Jordie Hein (So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) drove in Frank Martinez (Sr., Riverside, Calif., East LA College) with an RBI single in the top of the third. Nick Smelser tied the score at three when he doubled in two runs in the bottom of the third.
Bakersfield loaded the bases in the top of the fifth off of TexasState starter Taylor Black. With one out, Covey Morrow relieved Black got Kevin Younger (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) to pop out to short for the second out. The second Bobcats’ reliever of the inning, Jeremy Hallonquist got Chance Gusbeth (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) to ground out to third for the final out of the inning.
The Bobcats took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Andrew Stumph singled in Lovejoy. The ‘Runners chased Hallonquist when Martinez and Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) reached on a single and a walk respectively. Against Donnie Hart, who entered the game with a 0.35 ERA, Hein singled to short to load the bases. Shyrock grounded into a fielder’s choice, as Martinez was forced out at home, 5-2.
Brockmeyer returned the lead to the Roadrunners with a single that plated Hein and Sanay. Jones extended the lead to 7-4 when his single to left drove in Shryock and Brockmeyer.
Jeff McKenzie (Sr., El Dorado Hills, Calif., San Joaquin Delta College) extended his school record to 10 wins as he went the first five innings before giving way to James Barragan (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) in the sixth. Barragan gave up one hit over his first three innings relief. With one out in the ninth, Barragan hit pinch-hitter Colby Targun before allowing a double to leadoff hitter Kevin Sah.
Garrett Mattlage came up to bat as the tying run. This brought in Taylor Aikenhead (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Bakersfield College) to try and close it out. Aikenhead gave up a sacrifice fly to Mattlage which scored Targun to make it 7-5 with two outs. Lovejoy, who was 3-for-4 at that point, came to bat. Lovejoy worked the count to 3-and-2 before grounding out to short to end the game.
Hein went 3-for-4, reaching base four times as he was also hit by a pitch. He scored two runs and had an RBI. Brockmeyer, Martinez, and Shryock each charted two hits. Brockmeyer and Jones both drove in three RBI’s. This was the first league loss at home for TexasState.
