BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) and Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) both went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s to lead CSU Bakersfield (22-13, 7-3 WAC) past UTSA (19-14, 4-5 WAC) 6-3 Friday night.
With the score tied at one in the fifth The momentum of the game swung in the fifth inning. In the top of the inning, UTSA advanced runners to first and second with Daniel Rockett, Division I’s leading hitter, coming to bat. Jeff McKenzie (Sr., El Dorado Hills, Calif., San Joaquin Delta College), the WAC’s leader in wins and ERA, struck him out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the frame, Christensen doubled in Oscar Sanay (Jr.., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) to give CSUB a 2-1 lead Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) would come around to score on a wild pitch for the other ‘Runner run in the inning.
CSUB would three more times in the seventh. UTSA capitalized on a Bakersfield error to make it 6-2 and bring John Welborn up with the bases loaded with one out in the ninth. Welborn singled to left for an RBI and have Rockett come to the plate with the bases loaded once again. Taylor Aikenhead (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., BakersfieldCollege) relieved McKenzie. Rockett grounded to short for a 6-4 putout. A double play to end the game was called on the play by umpire Jeff Macias when he ruled that Welborn, the baserunner, interfered with Sanay’s throw to first.
McKenzie tied the Bakersfield school record for most wins in a season Friday night as he improved to 8-1. Jonathan Montoya (R-Sr., Chino Hills, Calif., Chino Hills HS) and Mike McCarthy both won eight games in 2011. McKenzie struck out eight and walked three. Aikenhead earned his third save of the year.
Rockett would end the night 0-5. Horacio Correa III led UTSA with two hits.
The series between the only two Division I baseball programs with the nickname “Roadrunners” continues Saturday 6 p.m.
