BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—J.D. Davis hit two home runs including a grand slam for a total of six RBI’s to lead No. 22 Cal State Fullerton (4-0) past CSU Bakersfield 8-2 (2-1) in college baseball action Sunday afternoon at Hardt Field.
Davis smacked a two-run home run in the top of the first to put the Titans ahead. A Carlos Lopez sacrifice fly in the third made it 3-0. Davis hit his second home run of the game, a grand slam in top of the fifth to break it open for the Titans. Cal State Fullerton would score one more in the fifth.
Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) drove in the first CSUB run with a single in the bottom of the eighth. The ‘Runners added a second run off a Fullerton wild pitch.
Davis, Matt Chapman, and Austin Diemer each had two hits for the Titans. Jones, Tyler Shryock (Jr, Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS), and Kris Cayton (Jr., Manhattan Beach, Calif., LA Harbor College) all two hits for CSUB.
Koby Gauna earned the win, tossing 7 2/3 innings of seven hit ball. Jonathan Montoya (R-Sr., Chino Hills, Calif., Chino Hills HS) took the loss in his first loss back after Tommy John Surgery a year ago on his pitching arm.
For the third consecutive day, CSU Bakersfield reset the school single game attendance record with a crowd of 1,358.
The Roadrunners open a home-and-home series against Cal State Northridge Tuesday night when the Matadors head to Bakersfield for a 6 p.m. start. CSUB travels to Northridge Wednesday at 3.
