BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—New Mexico State (32-20) held off a CSU Bakersfield (20-27) eighth inning rally to defeat the Roadrunners 5-3 Wednesday night at Hardt Field.
Zac Fisher’s sacrifice fly plated Bryan Karraker in the top of the first. The Roadrunners threatened in the second, but left the bases loaded. Robert Lecount’s two-RBI single in the top of the third highlighted a three-run rally. New Mexico State scored again in the top of the fourth.
New Mexico State starter Casey Collins retired 12 in a row at one point, but he ran into trouble in the eighth, as CSUB loaded the bases. Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) walked for an RBI with no outs. Trey Higginbotham relieved Collins, striking out Tyler Shryock (So., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) in a lefty against lefty matchup for the first out.
Randy Montoya came on to go righty-righty against Ross Hough (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS). A Montoya wild pitch scored the Roadrunners’ second run. Montoya struck out Hough, but hit two straight batters to allow CSUB to plate its third run. A third reliever, Robert Kraft, struck out Jordie Hein (Fr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) in a lefty against lefty matchup for the final out of the frame.
The Aggies went to one of their weekend starters, Adam Mott to close in the ninth. He struck out the side to end the game and earn his first save of the season.
Parker Hipp, and Karraker all posted three hits. The five New Mexico State pitchers limited the Roadrunners to six hits.
CSUB hits the road this weekend for a three game set at UC Irvine. Friday’s action gets underway at 6:30 p.m.
