RALEIGH, N.C.--No. 17 North Carolina State (31-12) hit three home runs including two in the bottom of the seventh as the Wolfpack defeated CSU Bakersfield (19-21) 8-4 Friday night at Doak Field.
The Roadrunners struck first when DC Legg's (R-Sr., Murrieta, Calif., Cypress College) RBI single plated Kevin Younger (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS). The Wolfpack tied the score in the bottom of the first when Trea Turner came home from third on a CSUB wild pitch.
Tyler Shryock (So., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) opened the second inning with his second home run of the year, but NC State tied it again in the bottom of the frame. CSUB scored on an error in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, but the Wolfpack tied the game for the third time in the bottom of the inning when Jake Fincher's sacrifice fly scored Ryan Mathews.
CSU Bakersfield took the lead in the fifth when a Dylan Christensen (Jr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) sacrifice fly drove in Legg. The Wolfpack used back-to-back home runs from Danny Canella and Ryan Mathews to power their way to a five-run seventh inning that proved to be the difference.
CSUB stranded 12 runners on base, six of which were in scoring position. Mathews and Logan Ratledge each tallied two hits to lead North Carolina State. Legg and Younger both had two hits for the Roadrunners.
The series continues Saturday, beginning at 3:30 p.m. (PDT).
