LINCOLN, Neb.- Spenser Messmore (Sr.,Grenada Hills, Calif., Alemany HS) tossed 10 innings for the longest outing in CSUB history; but the Nebraska Cornhuskers edged CSUB 3-2 in 11 innings during the first game of a Saturday doubleheader before the Roadrunners answered back with a 10-2 win in the nightcap to earn the Saturday split.
In game one, the Cornhuskers struck first taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second before the Roadrunners scored one in the third on a Kevin Younger (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) RBI single and tied the game in the fourth after an Oscar Sanay (So., Chula Vista, Calif.,Bonita Vista HS) sacrifice fly. Both teams would threaten later in the game and strand baserunners in scoring position. Following 10 complete innings, the most ever thrown by a CSUB pitcher, Messmore was lifted in the bottom of the 11th in favor of Hayden Carter (Fr., San Diego, Calif.,Vista HS) who walked the first hitter he faced before giving up a single to Chad Christensen and a single to Kale Kiser for the game-winning RBI for the Huskers.
Carter (1-3) took the loss for the 'Runners while Luke Bublitz got the win for Nebraska.
In the second game, CSUB jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Tyler Shryock (So., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) hit a three-run homer with one out to right field, his first of the season. The Huskers scored once in the third inning before the 'Runners made it 4-1 following a Nebraska error in the fourth and a Sanay ground ball to score Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS).
The major damage for the 'Runners came in the sixth inning when CSUB cleared the bases on two occasions with two outs. The first was an two-RBI double by Jordie Hein (Fr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) to right-center; followed by a two-RBI triple by Younger down the right field line which rolled into the corner and to the wall which put the Roadrunners up 8-1.
Jeff McKenzie (Jr., Sacramento, Calif., San Joaquin Delta CC) earned the win for CSUB throwing 8.1 innings allowing two runs on eight hits before giving way to Jordan Camacho (Jr., San Leandro, Calif. Ohlone CC) who recorded a double play to end the game against the only batter he faced in the bottom of the ninth. McKenzie improves to 4-4 on the season with the win.
The victory improves CSUB to 19-20 on the season. The series will be decided Sunday with a 12:05 CST start scheduled. Scott Brattvet (Jr., Trabuco Canyon Calif., Santa Ana College) will be on the mound for the Roadrunners.
