RIVERSIDE, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield (17-17) turned the program's first triple play as the Roadrunners defeated UC Riverside 6-3 (10-18) Sunday afternoon.

The triple play occured in the fifth inning. With runners on first and second, Vince Gonzalez lined out to Oscar Sanay (So., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) at second. Sanay threw to Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) for the second out. Brockmeyer then threw to Tyler Shryock (So., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) to complete the play.

The Roadrunners got on the board in the top of the second when Andrew Letourneau (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) walked with the bases loaded. With no outs in the second, Roadrunner starter Taylor Aikenhead (So., Lancaster, Calif., Bakersfield College) was removed in the second due to an ailment, Hayden Carter (So., San Diego, Calif., Vista HS) entered the game. The Highlanders loaded the bases with no outs before Carter got a pop out and a double play to end the threat.

The Roadrunners capitalized on the momentum as Frank Martinez (Jr., Riverside, Calif., East L.A. College) hit a three-run home run in the top of the third to increase the lead to 4-0. CSUB score two more in the sixth. A Kyle Boudreau three-run blast in the eighth cut the lead to three for the Highlanders. Carter retired the side in order in the ninth for his first collegiate victory.

Carter completed the game for CSUB, scattering seven hits over the final eight innings. Brockmeyer and Letourneau each had three hits. Martinez and Sanay both posted two hits.

The Roadrunners host USC Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
