BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield’s cross country team will be represented by a pair of Roadrunners at the NCAA West Regional this weekend. Junior Angel Valdez and freshman Paradise Pelzer will compete for the ‘Runners on Friday, Nov. 11, at Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento.
Coming off of a career season and a first for CSUB since joining the WAC, Valdez’s coach, Marcia Mansur-Wentworth is highly confident on the junior’s abilities: “Angel has made her mark for CSUB this fall with her 6k school record, first-ever WAC Athlete of the Week, and the first-ever All-WAC in cross country by a ‘Runner. Angel is making history one race at a time.”
Mansur-Wentworth has also put her faith in Pelzer, a freshman from Bakersfield, who raced just behind Valdez in every race this season. CSUB’s head coach expects Pelzer to represent the ‘Runners well in Sacramento.
All NCAA Division I teams from California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Hawaii are eligible to compete. The top two teams and top four individuals (not on one of those teams) will qualify for the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Indiana State University.
The last time the CSUB ‘Runners competed in the NCAA Regional was in 2012 with two individuals. The previous best finish at the Regionals is 134th by former record holder Cassey Glassey in 2010.
Valdez and Pelzer will compete in the 6k distance race Friday at 11 a.m. while Valdez will have an eye on improving her own school record in that event. For full results and a recap after the NCAA Regional, check back here at GoRunners.com. Live stats will be posted after the race at RTSPT.com.
