The first steps to replacing the 2008 senior class have been completed with the signing of nine student-athletes to the 2009 CSUB men’s soccer squad, Head Coach Simon Tobin announced Thursday.

Gyasi Zardes comes to Bakersfield from Leuzinger High School in Lawndale. The 6-1 striker has gained a wealth of experience, playing for the LA Galaxy Youth Academy since 2008. He participated in the U17 SUM Cup and later served as the U18 squad’s team captain, leading the team in scoring at the SUM Cup.

Zardes has previous affiliation with the Southbay Force, Celtic Hoops and Santa Monica United club teams. Along with competing for his high school’s soccer team, he was also the kicker on the Olympians’ football team.

Shane Ascheri was a three-time first team All-Freeway League selection as the starting goalkeeper for Troy High School in Fullerton. He recorded 105 saves and 12 shutouts in 20 games played during the 2008 season, leading the Warriors to the CIF Southern Section quarterfinals. The squad also reached the quarterfinals during Ascheri’s freshman season in 2005.

Twice voted his team’s Most Valuable Defensive Player and a three-time scholar athlete, Ascheri is also a member of the West Coast FC. The squad reached the CYSA National Cup quarterfinals in 2006 and the League Cup finals match in 2006 and 2007.

Ian Trantow, a 5-8 midfielder, hails from Arlington High School in Riverside. As the captain of his varsity squad, Trantow led the Lions to the 2009 Inland Valley League title and was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year, recorded 16 goals and 13 assists in 28 matches. Additional honors included first team All-Inland Valley, first team All-CIF Southern Section and selection on the CIF and Riverside County all-star teams. Trantow was also named to the 2009 all-area team in the Jan./Feb. edition of ESPN Rise Magazine.

Trantow’s club team, FC Barcelona Blue, has competed at Surf Cup, Disney Cup, Dallas Cup and Nomas, and claimed the Cal South U19 Gold bracket title in 2009.

Scott Luedtke is a defender out of Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas. Luedtke is a member of the Dallas Texans Soccer Club, which claimed the Region III West Premier League title in 2008. That season, the squad was won the Dallas Classic League Grand Championship, the North Texas State Cup and was a Regional III Southern Regionals semifinalist.

Luedtke has been a team captain for the Dallas Texans for five years and was a first team All-District selection from 2007-09. He has also competed on the Texas Olympic Development Program state team.

Mathijs Tabbers rounds out the quartet of signees a senior transfer who will be bring experience to the Roadrunner midfield. Having recently earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, Tabbers joins the CSUB program to continue his soccer career and work towards a postgraduate degree.

Tabbers has been a member of the first team of the BVV Barendrecht club team in Holland since 2007. He was awarded as the squad’s Most Talented Player and, in 2008, he led the first team to the Cup final, recording eight goals and eleven assists.

Also joining the Roadrunner squad this fall are Jesus Sanchez, Kory Kindle, Will Davis and Ernesto Hinojosa.
