BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—No. 22 CSU Bakersfield split a pair of matches on day one of the Roadrunner Invitational Saturday at the Hillman Aquatic Complex.
The Roadrunners fell to No. 6 Arizona State (15-4, 1-1 MPSF) 16-8 in the opening match. CSUB led three different times in the first quarter before ASU tied it at four with 1:26 to go. Ashley Paz’s third goal of the match tied it for the fifth time at the 6:25 mark of the second. The Sun Devils would record nine of the next 10 goals before Katie Benson scored just before the third period concluded. ASU outscored CSUB 2-1 in the final period.
Lena Mihailovic posted a game high five goals for Arizona State. Alkistis Benekou and Maud Koopman both charted hat tricks for the Sun Devils. Paz and Nicola Barrett each charted three goals for the Roadrunners. Mia Rycraw had 11 saves for ASU while Courtney Wahlstrom had nine saves for the ‘Runners.
“We were fantastic offensively early on against ASU,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “We had some fundamental defensive breakdowns which led to their run. We have to do a better job on defense, but we are going in the right direction.”
CSUB used a strong defense in the nightcap as the Roadrunners defeated Cal State East Bay 9-5 (9-8). CSUB forced 18 turnovers and made 11 steals during the contest. Wahlstrom spearheaded the defense as she made 15 saves.
The ‘Runners were up 3-2 after eight minutes, but shutout the Pioneers 2-0 in the second and would lead 8-3 after three periods. Kristen Jensen moved into sole possession of seventh on CSUB’s all-time scoring list with three goals. She has scored 164 goals in Roadrunner colors. Paz and Jada Helberg both scored twice for CSUB.
“We made the adjustments and the defense was strong in the first three quarters against East Bay,” Gall said. “A lot of our kids that usually don’t get a chance to play were able to show that they are ready to take the next step.”
The Roadrunners (12-11, 0-4 MPSF) host No. 11 Princeton on Sunday to conclude the tournament. The ‘Runner senior class will be honored prior to the 10:30 a.m. start against the Tigers.
