FRESNO, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield’s women’s golf team continued a busy stretch of the season with their second tournament over a five-day span. The Roadrunners opened the Fresno State Classic at San Joaquin Country Club on Monday with 36 holes of golf.
“I thought we got off to a decent start and held tight during the first round,” said Meghan Thomason, Director of Golf for the ‘Runners. “Chandler played great. She really came through when we needed a boost. The second round was extremely disappointing. We need to put up four solid scores tomorrow.”
At the turn, senior Chandler Bullman led the ‘Runners. The native of Bakersfield double bogeyed the first hole of the day, but went on to sink two birdies en route to a score of two-over-par. Freshman Macey Mills and junior Julia Stewart were tied at four-over, while junior Ariel Lee rounded out the scoring four at +5.
Bullman’s back nine was much less consistent, but the senior carded five birdies on the round and led the ‘Runners with a season-best score of 75 (+3). Lee and Stewart came into the clubhouse second for CSUB with matching scores of 79 while Mills rounded out the ‘Runner scoring four with an 83.
As a team, CSUB used 316 strokes and was 12th of 12 teams, but the 'Runners only sat four strokes behind 11th-place Cal State Fullerton.
In the second round, only one ‘Runner improved her scored from Round 1. After posting an 84 in the first round, junior Tori Peers improved by five strokes in the second go around. Peers parred 12 holes on her way to a team-best 79 in Round 2 and wound up second overall for CSUB with a Day 1 total of 163 strokes.
Lee, a native of Singapore, followed her 79 with an 81 to lead the ‘Runners through the first 36 holes with a score of 160. After a great first round, Bullman posted an 89, but still finished third overall for CSUB on the day at 164.
Mills matched her first-round score of 83 in Round 2 and finished with 166 strokes, fifth-best for the ‘Runners. Stewart’s 86 in the second round brought her two-round total to 165, just one stroke behind Bullman.
At the end of Day 1, CSUB was 12th of 12 teams at 645. UC Irvine sits atop the team leaderboard at 596 while Cal State Fullerton’s Martina Edberg leads all individuals with 140 strokes.
On Tuesday, the Roadrunners and the rest of the 72-woman field will return to San Joaquin Country Club for one final round of golf. The Fresno State Classic’s third round will kick off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
