BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Members of the CSUB women’s basketball team made a formal presentation of their prize for winning the NCAA’s Pack The House Challenge to Executive Director Dan Gorman and the Bakersfield Rescue Mission Tuesday at the CSUB Icardo Center.

Pack the House Challenge is national effort sponsored by the NCAA in which conferences and institutions compete to build women’s basketball attendance. CSUB was honored as the top NCAA Division I independent team in the promotion. One winner from each of the 31 Division I conferences was named along with the Roadrunners. Selections were based on marketing plan creativity and attendance criteria.

“The community does a great job of coming out to support us, so it’s nice when we have the opportunity to give something back,” says Roadrunner sophomore guard and Student–Athlete Advisory Council representative Nikki Leon. “It’s a privilege to be able to support the Rescue Mission, which helps so many people in our community.”

“Gifts like these are the foundation of the Rescue Mission,” says Gorman. “Because we don’t rely on one big donor, each gift we receive is so important. And the money will be used to help those most in need right here in Bakersfield.”

According to Gorman, the $500 the ’Runners donated is enough to give shelter, laundry service and three meals per day to four clients for one week. To put it in other terms, the donation can help provide nearly 300 meals to those in Bakersfield hit hardest by the current economic crisis.
