BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Sparked by a six hit, five run eighth innings, the CSUB baseball team rallied for a 10-8 win over the University of Utah in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Hardt Field. Despite another late rally in the nightcap, Utah was able to manufacture a pair of runs in the ninth to take game two, 10-8.

In the opener, CSUB took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Ryan McIntyre reached on an error, stole second and scored on a Jeremy Rodriguez double to center.

The lead was short lived as the Utes put together a huge second innings, scoring five runs on four hits and one Roadrunner fielding error, capped of by a three run homer by Rick Cornu.

Bakersfield responded with two outs in the bottom of the inning when Utah starter Jordan Whatcott walked three consecutive batters to load the bases. Kyle Richardson then blasted a bases-clearing double and McIntyre plated Richardson on a single to center, knotting the game at 5-5.

Utah added single runs in the third and seventh to take a 7-5 lead before Bakersfield exploded for five runs in the eighth. With one out, three consecutive hits led to a pair of runs scored and, with two outs, a Rodriguez double plated two more. Martin Medina followed with an RBI double, giving the Roadrunners a 10-7 advantage.

In the ninth, Cornu smacked his second home run of the game to pull Utah within two, but Bakersfield’s Medina earned his second save of the season, striking out the final batter with the bases loaded.

Bakersfield’s starting pitcher Erik Draxton struck out five while giving up eight hits and seven runs in 6.2 innings. Jason Kudlock picked up the win for CSUB, striking out two and giving up three hits and one run in two innings of work.

In the nightcap, Bakersfield found itself in another early hole, down 7-3 headed into the bottom of the seventh. Things looked up as the ‘Runners put together another late rally which included a three run homer by McIntyre and a two run shot by Stuart Smith, but the Utes pushed across one run in the eighth and two on bases loaded walks in the ninth to force the split.

Stephen Streich claimed the win for Utah while Medina, who attempted to close out a second consecutive game, instead took the loss for CSUB.

Brandon Boren went 6-for-9 with three RBIs to lead Bakersfield in the two games. McIntyre was a combined 4-for-10 with five RBIs and Rodriguez was 3-for-7 with three RBIs.

Bakersfield (3-4) and Utah (3-4) conclude their four-game series Sunday at Hardt Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
