BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — No. 30 UC Santa Barbara used a big six-run sixth inning and the powerful arm of reigning Big West Pitcher of the Year, Mario Hollands, to claim a 1-0 win over the CSUB baseball team Sunday at Hardt Field.

Through their four-game opening weekend, the Roadrunners moved to 2-2 on the young season while the Gauchos are now 1-1 after dropping their season-opener, 8-7 to St. Louis University Sunday morning.

A solo home run by designated hitter Matt Valaika and an RBI single by Bryce Tafelski gave UCSB a 2-0 lead through five. But the Gauchos then exploded for six runs on five hits in the sixth to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

After CSUB starting pitcher Sam Jones walked the Gauchos first two batters of the inning, shortstop Shane Carlson homered to left-center for three RBIs. The next two batters were retired on a fly out and strikeout, but UCSB rallied with three consecutive doubles, the third of which scored a run. Brian Gump then followed with an RBI single, forcing CSUB to look to its bullpen.

Freshman Jacob Valenzuela entered the game and forced a foul out to end the inning. Valenzuela tossed the final 3.1 innings, striking out a pair while scattering five hits and giving up two runs.

Jones took the loss for Bakersfield, giving up eight hits and eight runs in 5.2 innings.

Offensively, the ‘Runners were held at bay by Hollands. The left-handed sophomore struck out six, walked two and allowed just four hits in eight innings of work. Reliever David Meals pitched the final inning, recording three consecutive strikeouts to preserve the shutout.

Junior shortstop Kyle Richardson was a bright spot for the ‘Runners, going 3-for-4 at the plate, while also turning in a solid defensive performance that included four putouts and four assists.

Bakersfield returns to action Friday, Saturday and Sunday, hosting University of Utah in a four-game series. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Hardt Field.
