MESA, Ariz.—Sophomore Andrew Hansen pitched into the ninth inning for the first time in his career to lead CSU Bakersfield past NM State 11-7 in the second Western Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament game on Friday for the Roadrunners.
Hansen's previous high for innings pitched in a game was seven, which he posted on three different occasions. He threw a career high 120 pitches, 83 for strikes. He did not walk a batter as he struck out five.
The Roadrunners (31-23) sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, recording four hits on their way to six runs. CSUB chased NM State starter Renteria after just two outs. The Aggies closed to 6-3 after 3.5, but the Roadrunners exploded for five more runs in the bottom of the fourth. NMSU would add two in the sixth and two in the ninth.
CSUB leadoff hitter Jake Ortega tied his career high with three hits. Ortega was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Mahlik Jones was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. David Metzgar posted a 2-for-5 performance with two runs scored and a RBI. Max Carter drove in three runs while Junior Felix posted two RBI's.
Brent Sakurai led NMSU by going 4-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI. Austin Rotello was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Mason Fishback and Dan Wetzel both hit home runs for the Aggies (35-22). NM State, the number one seed coming into the WAC Tournament, was eliminated in two straight games.
CSU Bakersfield (31-23), the No. 2 seed in the WAC Tournament, will take on either No. 5 Northern Colorado or No. 3 Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon in an elimination game set to begin at 3 p.m. The Roadrunners must win two on Saturday and earn the victory in the winner take all game on Sunday to qualify for the NCAA Division I Tournament.
