BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield (13-11, 1-5 WAC) returns to the road this weekend when the Roadrunners travel to Chicago State for a three-game Western Athletic Conference baseball series. Friday and Saturday’s games will begin at 3 p.m. (CT) with Sunday’s finale getting underway at 12 p.m. (CT). Chicago State is coming off a bye week in Western Athletic Conference play. The Cougars opened the league slate by winning two of three at Seattle U Mar. 24-26. Chicago State is 6-19 overall after going 0-5 in non-conference play last week.
Matt Paciello leads the Cougars in hitting (.330), doubles (7), triples (3), home runs (1), RBI’s (21), and slugging percentage (.485). CSUB has defeated Chicago State eight of the nine times the teams have played since the Cougars joined the WAC in 2014.
On Friday night, the Roadrunners will send Max Carter to face Jake Perkins (R, 2-2). CSUB has not named a probable starter for either Saturday or Sunday’s games. Chicago State’s probable Saturday starter is Brad Moore (R, 0-4) while the Cougars’ Sunday probable starter is Grant Trower (R, 1-2).
David Metzgar tied his career high with five RBI’s as CSU Bakersfield defeated UC Irvine 14-2 Tuesday night. The ‘Runner victory broke a 10-game losing streak to the Anteaters that dated back to May 19, 2012 when CSUB defeated UCI 5-4. Metzgar went 3-for-4 with three runs scored against UCI. Metzgar has now reached bases in 21 consecutive games, the ninth longest such streak in school history.
Andrew Penner extended his hitting streak to 14 games at UC Irvine. He is hitting .438, the fifth highest batting average in Division I, entering this weekend’s play. Teammate Ryan Grotjohn is now hitting .424, the 10th best in D-1 entering the weekend.
