SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield’s track and field teams had another solid showing at the Cal Poly ShareSLO Invitational this weekend. The Roadrunners continued posting strong results and saw a pair of freshmen move up the Top 20 all-time lists in their events on Saturday.
Freshman Falon Wilson improved her personal best in the 100m hurdles by almost half of a second to 14.71. The Bakersfield native’s time moved her up ten places in CSUB’s Top 20 all-time list to eighth. Wilson went on to lead the ‘Runners in the 200m dash with a time of 25.98 in her first collegiate attempt at the event. Fellow freshman Mariah LeSure improved her PR by 0.25 seconds in the 200m (26.08).
LeSure finished eighth overall in the 100m dash with a new PR of 12.41, more than two tenths of a second faster than her previous best. The graduate of Bakersfield High School is now less than a tenth of a second outside of CSUB’s Top 20 list in the event. Wilson was close behind LeSure at 12.45 seconds on Saturday.
Freshman Alejandra Frausto ran her first collegiate 5000m race and just snuck into the CSUB Top 20 with a time of 19:19.26. The Bakersfield native’s time was good enough for a second-place finish on the Central Coast.
Junior Micaiah Lugo posted a PR in the hammer throw for the second straight meet. Her mark of 151-00 was good enough for sixth at Cal Poly’s meet and moves the native of Oxnard, Calif. up to 11th all-time in CSUB history in the event.
Freshman Paradise Pelzer led a group of ‘Runners in the 1500m race. The native of Bakersfield improved her previous best time by over eight seconds to 5:01.01. The mark is CSUB’s fastest of the season and was good enough for 16th overall on Saturday.
Sophomore Gabe Gaeta ran his first 400m dash and posted CSUB’s best time of the season at 51.01. Fellow sophomore Ar’reon Molina was close behind at 51.62. Molina went on to lead the ‘Runners in the 200m with a new PR of 22.93. Gaeta was one place behind Molina at 22.95 to finish eighth overall.
DeMario Brown, Jr. and Dayan Oduma also posted season-best times in the 200m at 23.25 and 23.75, respectively. Freshman Curt Threlkeld earned his second straight victory in the 800m with a time of 1:54.31.
Junior Alex Raya improved his PR in the 5000m by almost a whole minute with a third-place finish (16:38.63) at Cal Poly’s meet. The native of Oxnard, Calif. is now less than 30 seconds outside of CSUB’s Top 20 all-time list in the event.
Redshirt senior Emmett Wirtz finished second in the hammer throw with a mark of 149-06 feet. Sophomore Luis Mendez improved his PR in the hammer (132-05) by over six feet to finish two spots behind Wirtz. Mendez went on to PR again, leading the ‘Runners in the discus with a throw of 129-09.
The men’s 4x400m relay team finished second overall on Saturday, crossing the line with a time of 3:22.39.
A select group of ‘Runners will be back in action next week at the Distance Carnival hosted by San Francisco State, Mar. 31-Apr. 1. The rest of CSUB’s track and field teams will return to action Apr. 8 at the annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Southern California.
