BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – No. 23 CSU Bakersfield defeated Azusa Pacific 12-7 in non-conference water polo action Wednesday afternoon.

The Roadrunners got off to a slow start offensively with the score tied at just 1-1 after the first eight minutes. The Cougars (6-8) scored the first goal of the second period before Ashley Paz and Tancy Aldridge scored to put CSUB up 3-2 at halftime.

The difference was in the third quarter as the ‘Runners posted five goals to break the game open. The CSUB defense strengthened, allowing just two tallies for the Cougars in the third. The Roadrunners would outscore APU 4-2 in the fourth to make it the final 12-7 score.

Roadrunner goalie Courtney Wahlstrom made 14 saves to anchor the CSUB defense. Senior Kristen Jensen scored a team high three goals for the ‘Runners. Paz and Aldridge both scored a pair respectively.

“First half we struggled offensively,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “It just took us awhile to get the ball in the net, but once we did that things started flowing smoother.”

The Roadrunners (9-9, 0-2 MPSF) travel to UCLA (12-1, 1-0 MPSF) Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup.
