BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The start of the outdoor track and field season has arrived as CSU Bakersfield will head to the Cal State LA Invitational this weekend. The Roadrunners will travel to Los Angeles for the two-day meet that spans Mar. 3-4.

The competition will open up on Friday with CSUB’s throwers: Emmett Wirtz, Luis Mendez, and Micaiah Lugo. Wirtz, an All-WAC performer last year, and Mendez will compete in the hammer on Friday and will follow it up with the shot put on Saturday. Lugo, a junior, will tackle the hammer and discus on Friday in her season opener.

The rest of the ‘Runners will take to the Jesse Owens track and field on Saturday. CSUB’s trio of men's high jumpers, Joselito Flores, Justin McKinley, and Tim Van Horn, accounted for five of the men’s team’s All-Conference honors a year ago and will compete in the event in Los Angeles. McKinley, a senior, and Flores, a junior, will also take on the long jump while the former will compete in the triple jump as well.

A pair of freshmen will get their first chances to compete as ‘Runners on Saturday as Curt Threlkeld will run the 1500m race and Nick Zandes will tackle the pole vault and several other events. Both men are natives of Bakersfield and have impressive resumes from their prep careers. Threlkeld was a state finalist in the 800m last year while Zandes was nationally ranked in the decathlon.

Junior Tristan Watson will lead a group in the 110m hurdles along with redshirt sophomore Gabe Gaeta, who will also run in the 400m hurdles. Rounding out the men’s team is All-Conference performer Alec Benavides, who will take on the javelin and 110m hurdles on Saturday.

After a somewhat disappointing showing at the WAC Indoor meet, the Roadrunner women will get back to work in LA this weekend. Freshman Julianne Finch will compete in the pole vault while fellow freshmen Falon Wilson, Jazmine Ramey, and Mariah LeSure will take on a variety of sprinting events.

Redshirt senior Marina Emhoff, fresh off of an All-WAC run in the 400m, will tackle the 200m in Southern California while joining the freshman trio for the 4x100m relay. Junior Susannah Vera will compete in the high jump for CSUB this weekend.

The meet program is available in the linked PDF above. Full results and recaps from the Cal State LA Invitational will be posted here at the end of each day of competition.
