PISMO BEACH, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield opened the 2017 beach volleyball season with a pair of losses to Cal Poly and No. 3 UCLA Thursday afternoon.
The Mustangs defeated the Roadrunners 4-1 in the opener. Carol Grasso and Sara Little earned the lone CSUB victory by winning in three sets at No. 1 doubles. The Bruins swept the ‘Runners 5-0 in the second match of the day. UCLA won all five matches in straight sets. At No. 5, Ally Barber and Kayla Tinker lost 21-10, 21-19 to Chanti Holroyd and Lilly Justine.
“We were a little inconsistent and had a hard time adjusting to the changes and the pressure that Cal Poly and UCLA were applying to us,” said CSUB head coach Cesar Benati. “The competition was good for some of our pairs for the first day as they put in place, the skills that we have been working on in practice. However we need more consistency to achieve better results.”
CSUB is at No. 7 Long Beach State Saturday for a pair of duals. The Roadrunners face Irvine Valley College in an exhibition at 1 p.m. before taking on the 49ers at 2:30 p.m.
