CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield’s men’s golf team continued the Folino Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton with its final two rounds of golf on Tuesday. After a slow start in the first two rounds, the Roadrunners found their grooves and posted the team’s best single-round of the tournament behind junior Nathan Green’s consistent shooting.
After play was suspended toward the end of Round 2 on Monday, the ‘Runners came back out and wrapped up early on Tuesday morning. Senior Izzad Ibrahim led the way in the second round for CSUB, posting a score of 76 (+4) behind four birdies and seven pars. Green was the only other ‘Runner under 80 on the round as his 79 kept the junior in the lead overall for CSUB.
Freshmen Warren Miller and Dominick Hoover rounded out the CSUB scoring four with rounds of 80 and 81, respectively. As a group, CSUB had a single-round total of 316, three strokes more than in Round 1. The ‘Runners were last of the ten teams, but were only four strokes behind British Columbia for eighth. Junior Garry Cai improved his first round score by two strokes with an 86 in Round 2.
Green bounced back from the 79 to shoot his second 74 (+2) of the tournament in the final round. The native of Green River, Wyo. recorded a three-round total of 227 (+11) this week, Green’s second-best 54-hole tournament score of the season, to tie for 28th overall of 60 student-athletes.
Three other ‘Runners scored in the 70s to contribute to CSUB’s best single round score (306, +18) of the tournament and seventh-best of the season. Miller, a Bakersfield native, carded a 76 in Round 3 to finish the tournament with a total of 238 strokes, fourth-best for the ‘Runners.
Hoover was one stroke behind Miller in the final round and put together a three-round score of 233, second-best for CSUB. Ibrahim’s 79 rounded out the CSUB scoring four on Tuesday afternoon and gave the senior a 237 for the tournament, one stroke better than Miller. Cai finished the final round with a 93 and the week at 267.
As a team, CSUB finished with a 54-hole score of 935 (+71). The ‘Runners finished tenth of ten teams in their first tournament back from winter break. Long Beach State's Joe Fryer took the individual title with a score of 209 (-7) while helping the 49ers take the team title at 872 (+8).
The Roadrunner men will have next weekend off before returning to action. CSUB will travel to St. George, Utah, Feb. 13-14, for the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational hosted by Southern Utah. The two-day tournament will take place at Sunbrook Golf Club.
