BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- On an evening that started with last season’s WAC Champions being honored pregame it was newcomer Shon Briggs making the most of his CSUB debut, scoring a game-high 21 points on 9-12 from the field in the Roadrunners' 96-54 win over San Diego Christian Saturday night.
“We’ve put him in a lot of position where he can just do what he likes to do,” Barnes said of Briggs’ effort. “We’ve kind of figured him out a little bit in where he likes to get the ball and he’s really dangerous once he catches it.”
The junior forward led three other Roadrunners in double figures as Damiyne Durham added 20 second-half points as the Roadrunners who never trailed in the contest, stretched their 46-32 lead in the second half considerably by outscoring the Hawks 50-22 in the second frame. Jaylin Airington scored 15 while Dedrick Basile added 11 for the Roadrunners.
“I thought it was a great team effort,” Barnes said. “There were times when we definitely played the way we like to play and there were times where we didn’t execute as well but I thought we had great effort and we got a lot of guys involved.”
CSUB led by 14 at the half and pulled away almost immediately in the second half. Matt Smith scored two of his nine points with 11:56 remaining and CSUB would cruise from that point forward. Durham scored on the next possession via a floater in the lane. He would continue the hot hand scoring 18 points in the final 11 minutes including six three pointers in the victory.
CSUB was 19-28 from the field in the second half and 38-59 for the game good for 64%. They also managed 9-15 from three-point range, forced 22 turnovers which led to 27 points and outrebounded the Hawks 38-15. The Roadrunners also took advantage of their athleticism in the post outscoring SD Christian 56-18 in the paint. The Hawks were led by Isaiah Milan who scored 15 points.
