BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Gonzaga's Cassie Geerdts scored with 10 seconds remaining in the second overtime as the 'Zags defeated Bakersfield 2-1 in the 2014 women's soccer opener Friday night.
Gonzaga opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Tori Lee converted on a penalty kick. Ashley Borel (R-So., Oxnard, Calif., Ventura College) tied the match in the 50th minute when she put back a Haley Hatfield (Sr., Sacramento, Calif., Christian Brothers HS) deflection.
With time winding down in the second overtime, the gamewinner was set up by Mikaya Anderson who sent the ball toward the Roadrunners' net where Jordan Travis cross the ball to Geerdts who put the ball past CSUB goalie Tori Ornela (R-Jr., Lemoore, Calif., Lemoore HS) at the 109:50 mark.
Gonzaga outshot Bakersfield 30-4, 11-1 on goal. Ornela made eight saves.
“I can’t fault the effort and commitment," said Roadrunner head coach Gary Curneen. "We’ve got things we need to work on, but in terms of what we wanted out of them, it was absolutely brilliant. We have got to improve and we will improve. We will get better than this for sure. I thought our team did really well and I’m proud of our effort. Tonight was a good base that we can work on.”
Bakersfield returns to the Main Soccer Field when the 'Runners host Eastern Washington at 3 p.m.
