BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- Two members of the Bakersfield men's track and field team were honored this last weekend for their academic success. Matthew Turkington (RJr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) and Justus Mora (Sr., Sparks, Nev., Spanish Springs HS) were inducted into the Alpha Chi Honor Society on Sunday in a ceremony at the Doré Theatre on CSU Bakersfield's campus. Additionally, Mora was one of 17 students awarded the Academic Medal for Success.

Alpha Chi is an honor society for juniors, seniors, and graduate students that is not exclusive to student-athletes. This weekend's inductees were selected by recommendations of the department chairs and only qualified by being in the top five percent of the students in their fields. The induction was overseen by former NCAA Faculty Representative Dr. Kegley, CSUB President Dr. Mitchell, the Provost, and the Deans of several departments.

"I am so proud of these two young men for their commitment to academics as well as being outstanding leaders on the track and field team," said Bakersfield's Director of Track and Field Marcia Mansur-Wentworth. "They truly embody the term 'Student-Athlete.'"

Mora will graduate this June with a degree in psychology and hopes to attend graduate school. Turkington will return next year as a fifth-year senior and is a petroleum engineering major.
