SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--The Bakersfield wrestling team had five competitors place at the 38th annual California Collegiate Open. There were no team scores.
Adam Fierro (R-So., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS), who is redshirting this season, won the 165-pound title. Fierro went 4-0 during the meet, including a 5-4 decision in the finals over fellow redshirt, Tony Chay of Oregon State. Fierro is now 21-3 in open competition this season, winning his third open tournament championship of the year.
Jose Mendoza (R-Sr., Selma, Calif., Selma HS) finished third at 133 pounds. Mendoza advanced to the semifinals before losing 5-4 to Oregon State's Drew Van Anrroy, the eventual tournament champion. Mendoza bounced back to defeat Oregon State's Jack Hathaway 6-4 for third.
Dalton Kelley (R-Sr., Alamosa, Colo., Alamosa HS) and AJ Fierro (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) advanced to the semifinals of the 149-pound weight class where Fierro, who is redshirting this season, defeated his veteran teammate by a 5-3 count. Fierro lost 9-5 in the finals to Cal Poly's Kyle Chene. Kelly won his wrestleback to advance to the third place match against Oregon State's Jared Reis. Reis handed Kelley a 3-2 loss, dropping Kelley to fourth.
Reuben Franklin (Jr., Murrietta, Calif., Vista Murrieta HS) finished fourth at 197 pounds. Franklin made it to the semifinals before losing to the eventual class champion, Cal Baptist's Caleb Gerl 5-3. Franklin won his wrestleback before being pinned by Oregon State's Cody Crawford 3:33 into the third place match.
The Roadrunners travel to Cal Baptist Thursay for a 7 p.m. dual before heading to No. 5 Oklahoma State next Saturday for a 4 p.m. (CST) dual.
