BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--The Bakersfield volleyball team had four players hit .333 or higher as the Roadrunners swept Grand Canyon 3-0 in Western Athletic Conference volleyball action Saturday.
The 'Runners (17-10, 9-4 WAC) committed just one hitting error (16-1-40) in the opening set, winning the frame by a 25-20 count. Bakersfield made just two hitting errors (18-2-37) in the second set as the Roadrunners defeated the Antelopes (9-17, 3-10 WAC) 25-9. Bakersfield rounded out the night by committing just four hitting errors in the third set, hitting .400 (20-4-40) and earning the sweep 25-13.
Julia Bowen (Sr., Ottawa, Ontario, Wilfrid Laurier Univ.) led the hit parade by going for a .562 average (9-0-16). Molly O'Hagan (Jr., Tonganoxie, Kan., Tonganoxie HS) hit .550 (12-1-20) on the night. Shayna Guitare (Sr., Torrance, Calif., Pierce College) had 13 kills and a .333 average (13-3-30). Debora Araujo (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) had 11 kills and a .333 average (11-2-27). Fernanda Gonçalves (Sr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) tallied 44 assists and nine digs.
"I attribute tonight's win to how much work and preparation our players put in this week," said Bakersfield head coach Jolene Shepardson. "Everyday this week, our players came in the gym focused and ready to get better. We stayed very patient through a tight first set and were able to make some important tactical adjustments."
The Roadrunners are home for the final time in 2013 when Bakersfield hosts Loyola Marymount Thursday night at 7 p.m.
