BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - After the completion of a national search, Bakersfield Roadrunner Athletics is pleased to announce the addition of Arthur Smith as Spirit Squad Coordinator for the Roadrunners’ cheer, dance and mascot squads.
Smith comes to Bakersfield with Division I experience from programs such as Wichita State and Purdue University. Most recently at Purdue, Smith led the Boilermakers to three straight top-12 finishes at the National Cheerleaders Association Nationals Competition, including a fifth-place finish in 2009. Prior to Purdue, he led the co-ed spirit squads at Wichita State, helping lead the Shockers to a national championship at the Nation’s Best Championships in 2006.
“I’m excited to be in California and Bakersfield specifically,” Smith said. “This is a great opportunity to not only build a program but build one at the highest level and do it the right way.”
Smith will not only work within athletics, but also with the campus programming committee to plan and execute traditional and newly developed programs and events.
"We are happy to have Coach Smith join our team, he brings a winning attitude and has proven success at building spirit programs," said senior associate athletic director for external operations Ziggy Siegfried. "I look forward to seeing our cheer, dance, mascot and all spirit programs being taken to a much higher level under his leadership."
Along with his coaching experience within intercollegiate athletics, Smith was also a head coach for a number of all-star gyms in Wichita, Kan., leading his teams to several national titles. Smith says a move to California is exciting on a personal level, but more importantly he believes the area is rich with cheer and dance prospects.
“There is a lot of talent in California,” he said. “One of my first goals is to capture that talent and keep it here.”
With the winter sports season rapidly approaching, Smith will hold tryouts for the cheer and dance teams this Wednesday, and Thursday October 9 and 10 from 6-8 P.M. in the Student Rec Center. Both men and women are encouraged to tryout. Those wishing to do so are asked to have at least two-years experience, along with stunting abilities. Tumbling skills are also highly-encouraged. Dancers are also asked to have Jazz and Hip-Hop experience when trying out.
Limited scholarships and out-of-town game travel are a few of the new incentives for making this 2013-14 spirit squad.
