BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Bakersfield rallied back from a 5-1 deficit to defeat Seattle U (19-32, 8-15 WAC) 9-7 to sweep the Redhawks Sunday afternoon. The victory gave the 'Runners a sweep of the Redhawks and marked the 34th (34-18, 17-7 WAC) of the year for the program, a new school record (33 was the old mark, set in 2011).

A Nick Latta three-run home run in the top of the third highlighted a five-run Seattle U outburst as the Redhawks took a 5-1 lead after 2 ½. CSUB scored two in the bottom of the third to get to within two.

Jordie Hein (So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) made it a 5-4 game when he singled in Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS). Hein’s hit chased SU starter Connor Moore in favor of Redhawks’ closer Eric Yardley with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Yardley gave up an infield single to Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) to load the bases for Tyler Shyrock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS). Shryock singled up the middle to plate to for a 6-5 CSUB lead.

Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) extended the lead to 7-5 with an RBI single to score Sanay. Austen Brand and Landon Cray recorded RBI’s in the top of the sixth to tie the score at seven.

Seattle U pushed a runner to third with one out in the top of the seventh, but the third Roadrunner pitcher of the day Chuck Buchanan (R-Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Allan Hancock College) struck out Brian Olson for the second out. Bryndon Ecklund grounded out to second to end the inning. 

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Chance Gusbeth (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) reached on an infield single. He advanced to third on a Frank Martinez (Sr., Riverside, Calif., East LA College) single. A Yardley wild pitch in the allowed Gusbeth to score for a 8-7 Roadrunners’ lead. Christensen provided the ninth CSUB run with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

Seattle had the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth with one out, but Buchanan got Ryan Somers to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.  

Gusbeth and Christensen both recorded three hits. Christensen drove in three runs. Martinez entered the game as a pinch-hitter and came away with two hits. Hein, Sanay and Shryock each posted two hits. Shryock drove in two runs. Somers had three hits for Seattle. Latta and Cray both had two hits for Redhawks.

Entering the final weekend of conference play, CSUB holds a two-game lead over UT Arlington. The Roadrunners are at San JoseState May 17-19 while the Mavericks are at SacramentoState. Next up for Bakersfield is a meeting with No. 22 Cal Poly on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. in San Luis Obispo.
