BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—For the second consecutive evening Bakersfield (33-18, 16-7 WAC) used a hot start to defeat Seattle U (19-31, 8-14 WAC) as the ‘Runners held off the Redhawks 11-9 Saturday night.

The Roadrunners sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first on the way to scoring seven runs. Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) and Mylz Jones (Fr., Palmdale, Calif., Paraclete HS) both drove in two runs during the frame.

Seattle did load the bases in the top of the second, but Sanay made a barehanded catch of a Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) toss from shortstop to record the final out of the inning at second. The Redhawks threatened again in the top of the sixth, but Shyrock pulled off the hidden ball trick at shortstop to help put down the attack.

CSUB would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth before Seattle plated three runs in the top of the seventh. The Roadrunners scored once in the bottom of the seventh. The Redhawks sent 10 to the plate the top of the eighth, scoring five runs to make it a 10-8 game. The rally was finally ended when Chance Gusbeth (Fr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) made a leaping catch in right to end the eighth. Jordie Hein (So., Scottsdale, Ariz., Chapparal HS) gave CSUB some more breathing room with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth.

Taylor Aikenhead (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) hit Cullen Hendrickson to open the top of the ninth. A wild pitch moved Hendrickson to second.  Hendrickson moved to third on a Chase Field ground out to second. Landon Cray’s ground to second scored Hendrickson to make it a two-run ball game. Nate Roberts would ground out to second to end the game.

Jones recorded three hits, marking the fourth time this season the freshman third baseman has tallied at least three in a game. Sanay, Shyrock, Kevin Younger (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) and Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., SaddlebackCollege) each posted two hits. Ryan Somers and Nick Latta each had three hits for the Redhawks. Cray and Somers both drove in two runs.
