DES MOINES, Iowa--Bakersfield's Tyler Iwamura (R-Sr., San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe Christian HS) and Bryce Hammond (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) both went 1-1 on day one of the NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships Thursday.

North Dakota State's Trent Sprenkle, the No. 9 seed, defeated Iwamura, 4-1 in the opening match at 125 pounds. In the first consolation match on Thursday night, Iwamura defeated Rob Deutsch of Old Dominion 8-2. He will wrestler Steve Bonnano of Hofstra in the second round of the consolation bracket Friday morning.

This will be the third straight season that Iwamura and Bonnano will wrestle each other at nationals. Bonnano defeated Iwamura at the 2011 and 2012 national championships.

At 174 pounds, Hammond dropped a 3-1 decision to the No. 6 seed, Logan Storley of Minnesota in the first round. Hammond defeated the 11th seed, Blake Stauffer of Arizona State 4-1, in a rematch of the Pac-12 Championship match in the first round of consolations Thursday night.

Hammond will take on the University of Buffalo's John-Mar Cannon in the second round of the consolation bracket Friday.

The tournament continues Friday with Session Three beginning at 8 a.m. PDT. Session Four is set for 4 p.m. (PDT).Both sessions will be televised on ESPN U and ESPN3.com.
