BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- CSU Bakersfield Director of Athletics Jeff Konya has been appointed to serve as a member of the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee, as announced by the NCAA Division I Administration Cabinet. Konya will serve a four-year term on the committee.
The Division I Men's Soccer Committee is responsible for selecting and seeding teams for the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament, along with staffing and assigning officials for tournament games. Konya will be one of the 10 members on the committee.
"I'm very pleased to serve the NCAA membership in this role as interest in NCAA men's soccer is on an upward trend nationally," Konya said. "Bakersfield has shown a passion for our soccer program and for the sport; I plan on taking that same passion and using it in this role on a national level."
Konya is in his third year as Athletics Director at CSUB where the Roadrunners have developed a winning tradition at the Division I level in men's soccer. The 2011 team was the first team in the program's short Division I history to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, hosting what was one of the most heavily-attended first round games.
The 'Runners have also won three-straight MPSF Pacific Division titles and will be moving into the Western Athletic Conference in 2013 as the conference once again sponsors the sport. CSUB also had two student-athletes sign professional MLS contracts, Gyasi Zardes with the Los Angeles Galaxy and Kory Kindle with the Colorado Rapids.
Konya's service on the Men's Soccer Committee will begin September 1, 2013 and continue through September 1, 2017.
