BAKERSFIELD, Calif-- Tyler Shryock (Jr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) tied the CSU Bakersfield school record for most hits in a game as CSUB defeated Nebraska 9-4 in the 2013 baseball season opener for both teams. Shryock was 5-for-5 with two RBI's, tying Brandon Boren who had five hits in a game in the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

The Cornhuskers scored twice in the top of the first to take an early lead. Cael Brockmeyer (Jr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) drove in the first CSUB run in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single that scored Shyrock. Christensen tied the score with an RBI double later in the inning.

A two-RBI single from Shyrock in the second gave the Roadrunners their first lead of the 2013 campaign. Oscar Sanay (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Bonita Vista HS) added an RBI later in the frame for a  5-2 CSUB advantage. Kevin Younger (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) recorded an RBI sac bunt in the third for the Roadrunners.

Tanner Lubach homered to open the fourth for the Cornhuskers. CSUB scored a run off a Nebraska wild pitch in the sixth. After the Huskers got one in the top of the eight, Shryock's fifth saw was part of a two-run 'Runner spurt for a 9-4 lead.

Dylan Christensen (Sr., Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Saddleback College) tallied three hits. Brockmeyer chartedtwo hits and two RBI's. Chance Gusbeth (Lancaster, Calif., Desert Christian HS) also posted two hits.

Jeff McKenzie (Sr., El Dorado Hills, Calif, San Joaquin Delta College) picked up the victory for CSUB. McKenzie struck out six while giving up five hits over the first six. Hayden Carter (So., San Diego, Calif., Vista HS) earned the save by pitching the final three innings. Chad Christensen led the Huskers with three hits (3-for-4).

Opening weekend for the Roadrunners continues Saturday when CSUB hosts USC Saturday at 2 p.m.

OPENING DAY NOTES: A team of skydivers from nearby Taft brought the  ball in for the first pitch...CSUB has now opened all five of its varsity seasons at home...The Roadrunners are 2-3 in season openers...CSUB head coach Bill Kernen, who has coached every game in Roadrunner history, is two wins away from 100 as 'Runners mentor ...1,075 fans attended the game, a new school record for CSUB...The old record of 1,063 was set against USC in 2012...Sanay became the 14th CSUB player to be hit by a pitch in a game.
